Jonas, Brother

Lapping up the self-effacing synth symphonies of old kosmische masters past, San Franciscan maestro and Harvard Electronic Music Centre alumni Jonas Reinhardt’s soundscapes are opulent chip symphonies. Out on Kranky his eponymous debut picks at both Harmonia’s ambient flutters and fellow Cali cad Adam Forkner’s usual psychedelic paunch. Beats rarely muster much more life than a flinching pulse, often not far removed from some ambient library recording for a TV lobotomy as Reinhardt’s minimalist compositions nestle contentedly into that soft slurry inside your skull.

Crook Grind Kicks

An idle Californian slacker spewing out riotous lo-fi anthems, Nathan Williams’ haggard larynx hollers his chore-dodging routine on ‘So Bored’ as if penned and produced high on glue from under a duvet clothed in nothing more than some soiled kegs. Releasing his debut Wavves LP, Wavvves, through De Stijl at the turn of ‘09 after racking up a number of 7″s on Release The Bats and Fuck It Tapes, his solo ensemble is like the melding of Wipers’ putrid jams, Pixies’ sunken grunge harmonies and anything Calvin Johnson ever croaked his way through.

Buggin’
Ripping into your hippy innards, scattering those healing crystals all over the pavement as claret coats all, ‘Skeng’ remains one blade lurching gutwards, fleshing you out. Released way back when on Hyperdub and later re-appearing for The Bug’s finest collection of apocalyptic dub bludgeons yet with the release of London Zoo a few months back, this bass-heavy bastard finds everyone’s favourite Roll Deep riddim menaces Killa P and Flowdan slash it out over Kevin Martin’s usual low-end grind. Guincho-vision
As you may well have noted, NPIP’s rather prone to hypothetics, having it in mind to toss noises out from our imagination so they can exist in situ – witness the placement of Supersoul records into erupted Teutonic cities, Telepathe found hooded on soar-sore night wounders, Stopmakingme waking in teenage bedrooms. Like our own clumsy hacking toward scrapbook symbolism earlier this year, seems El Guincho’s debut album Alegranza will forever reverberate across tropical beachfronts half-remembered from travel brochures, with the parrots and palm trees in ‘Palmitos Park’.

Haunter

Much has been made of the architecture of Burial’s dubstep. Squeals of psychogeographic glee heralded bass that’d groan swollen with the rhythm of London’s subterranean rail traffic and drums like so many clattering cries jarring through estate stairwells. Untrue wasn’t the sound of humans - rather it seemed to grow from the brickwork and filthy concrete. Here, Alessio Natalizia takes the ghost of a city and shows it the mirror, provoking existential howls that home-made recorders – like Egon Spengler’s ghoul-traps, I guess – struggle to contain, ultimately overflowing in a purple cloud of drone and far-off star wails, spectres fleeing gape-jawed into the night.
