End of a Sentry

Jah Pat has been eaten by machines. He liked it, though - conveyor belts reeled him in grinning, tireless rubbery tongues delivering him unto a belly of cogs, cables and tiny lasers made huge by the chewing of him into blissful invisibility. Busy and supremely well-oiled, NPIP004 is the greatest mix Pat’s offered up yet - the ever-reliable bassland sentry going deeper, darker, seeing more than ever before.

Taking in Darkstar, George Fitzgerald, Daniel Wang, Joy Orbison and Deadboy, the full tracklist can be found after the jump.

Overfly

Though you don’t need to be any messiah to jump and presume Martyn’s Great Lengths may well be one of the finest releases of recent years comes its arrival in March, you might need to have been based near the myrtle Thames to have checked out the Dutchman’s flying set at FWD last night. As with TRG and 2562 taking liberally from anything jungle through to garage, Martyn’s set featured those usual slabs of techno besides pinching 2-step, scything Basic Channel analogue static eating away at El-B’s sultry snaps, 3024 holding hands with SW2. It all certainly got Jammer pent up, the Murkle Man emerging to grab the mic from The Spaceape’s clutches, chatting over the back end of a Kode9 set that moved from a solid hour of jungle to more lunken dub (it should be mentioned that Jammer excitedly proclaimed new love for the ‘genius’ of Joker’s ‘Digidesign‘).

Also equally impressed has been Francois K, so enamored with Martijn Deykers that he took him on to curate the house forefather’s Deep Space night in New York.

With Great Lengths but a few weeks away Rough Trade have this exclusive mix from Martyn, available as a bonus lure when you buy or pre-order the album from the record shop. Familiar faces feature; all pull spotters guides from crumpled in pockets.

And big up Rough Trade!

2OO8 ≠ 32

Photo: Tom King

It’s hard not to feel berk or beast when attempting to cram 12 months into 700 words, so we won’t even try. This late in the day there’s going to be omission to an extent that outstretches the impatient collateral of memory loss, especially as the mind wanders back to recall a year of live music that’s without peer in my 23 on this earth.

So, there’ll be no divvying up of 2008 between movements and moods here. Just a necessary trawl through the shipwreck, flotsam fished from choppy waters and beacon buoys twinkling in the ocean of our terrible collective memory.

Irate Radio

Heads down, hoods up - low-bit transmitters throb through Union walls to tear down Next City; razed by vollies of gilded treble and low-slung dubshots. Jah Pat’s first No Pain In Pop mix plays like a year’s best of, featuring the choicest of deep, doomsday slabs from Quest and Silkie, as well as the hi-tech clatter of Martyn’s ‘Suburbia’ and Zomby’s apt pair ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Strange Fruits’. Full track list after the jump.
