Paradise Vendors

Chaps, grasp glands for London’s Male Bonding, three sorts getting fresh with that swamp-bass-super-sound and the teenage poltergeist scar-isms of a pink punk past. Descended from (early) Descendents, gay for Gray Matter, ‘Rehearsal Song’’s tuneful racket seems made B(y).S(aturdays).F(or).S(aturdays)., rising sober, miraculously enough, to turn up at your friend’s house with an amp and some plugs just as mother and father are heading out to John Lewis for salad and furnishings. Male Bonding are no flannel arrivistes, there back in the Smell-sent days, as the first lo-fi rumbles moving across the water were picked up by alien wave stations hunkered down somewhere in the undergrowth plunge of Epping Forest.

Male Bonding’s Paradise Vendors Inc label yesterday issued another slab of Eden in the form of a four-way split that grapples to gather a quartet NPIP favourites: Old Blood, Graffiti Island, Rapid Youth (the Murietta collective) and, of course, MB themselves. Get it here.

Swinging Jaw: Old Blood

Writing songs with Jael is easy because I tell her what to do and she does it. She isn’t a musician, she’s a photographer, but she loves music so it works. She is like a drum machine and I like that quality. Too many times drummers want to add and add and add until it’s one long drum solo. I hate that. That’s why I will take my sister over some douche bag kid who played jazz drums for seven years with Miles fucking Davis. I don’t give a shit. Drums should be pulsy and thriving, kinda like a heart beating over and over. We love that rhythm and it never changes because if it did, we would die. And that’s how I look at rhythm, and Jael gets it.

:::::::Winners

Luggin’ valve amps from Las Vegas, Old Blood set themselves down on your greedy lobes a couple minutes before heading inside to fry your brains, dragging all of Nevada’s empty air and silence with them. The more you turn up, the more of those quiet molecules’ll turn, fuming and grand strut, like Jael and Caleb shuffled up to Link Wray a long time ago and asked him to turn the shrapnel pulled from piggie’s guts into liquor. A few minutes later Fred’s on his knees handing eight-year-olds a 40oz of Hurricane Malt and blowing fag smoke in the faces of the American young - yes, such obscured lead lines stretch back behind Old Blood like sorry, raw tendrils; further than the history of hardcore as drums just keep on, and in the hot noise voices bark, humans crying out.
