Alien but unaware, Speculator’s ‘Van Nothing’ shuffles about its daily business like a beast that ‘til two minutes ago had been eking out an existence in a cave somewhere long-lost and forever remote from human eyes. As you draw closer to ogle its gaze fixes before turning, totally unmoved by the novelty of the situation as its seen the shape of men form before in the aimless curses and swirls of hermit babble that have gathered there nightly for millennia. The sounds feed, the beast dining on the occasional chips of chalk the lonely clamour dislodges from the walls of the singing cave; a happy, awkward guardian found last New Year’s Eve eve by one Nick Ray, drawn irresistably toward the hovel from New York and usual pursuits with din brigade Herons. An extensive document of such outings, 201984-7, will emerge some time later this year.
