Sore boy shuffle

Dan Avery’s mixes creep covert into the world like wrong, dark loves, the sole determined mind in a muddle of confused intoxicateds. This latest - Autumn, 2009 - takes that moment when ivy club laser falls upon you like tractor beam and stretches that moment out into 50 minutes of odd, alien lucidity. Lemonade, Fuck Buttons and Gold Panda are encountered along the way, as well as Florence and the Machine, Simian Mobile Disco and Tiga - let’s be clear, these people could never appear here without Stopmakingme’s turning them into something more subtle and sly, rushed into the bunker club in fake ‘taches and comedy specs. That’s the way, though - the odd lucidity, bunkered up, hunkering down, turning the world inside out from beneath its busiest bricks.

Got To Garden Path

Late night and the wind’s got up, catching the water arching, watching the water spray, faces gleaming together with the same, cool dew as the only notion of time exists, for now, in the leaves of the Many Great Oaks that roll above the banks across weir foam like a magic eye painting, tense legs hustling, dragging glee-guts ’round the island. Something you swallowed just collapsed the walls that stand between senses and the boat party passes blaring Psychic Ills‘ ‘Red Spirit’, the scene, now hung with swelter, swivels eyes through a temporary chimera, sour jewels low-lighting this deep suburban tropic as Petar Dundov’s ‘Sparkling Stars’ finds a new way to memorise the fractured, following pulses of a beating broken heart.

Thanks once again to Dan Avery for another fine mix, tracklisting beyond ‘the jump’.

I Think I Lost My Headache

Photo: Peter O’Grady

To clarify, that’s not Dan Avery standing there amid the leaves, staring wist-prone through compromising lids out into the half-light and the near-distance. Dan Avery is Stopmakingme, a favourite DJ and ally of NPIP’s who has gathered what we hope will be the first in a windfall of mixes for us and you this blustery evening.

“It’s nice to be asked to make a series of mixes of stuff that I could never get away with on a dancefloor. I hope for each one to have a slightly different feel.

“/Loveless/ is my favourite record ever made. This first mix I think reflects that.”

We’d say so. ‘I Think I Lost My Headache’ commits nine-strong to one giddy glide, faltering, wallfloral propulsions that ache with the gazing rhythm of a summer in full throe.

Stopmakingme – I Think I Lost My Headache (NPIP0001)

Bound more for the bedroom than the ball, Avery hones a decency common to acts that seem as locked into the gawky pallor of Shields’ outfit as they are the drive of NEU! and Dinger’s motorik beat, jams sliding cooly into each other before lusty paws meet mock-accidental ‘round the half hour mark, fingers clasping tentative together, eyes that don’t dare to look down but will soften and subside, hopelessly, into shared wells of lash-batted recognition.

‘I Think I Lost My Headache’ is made of:

One Little Plane – ‘Lotus Flower’

Eine Kleine Nacht Musik – ‘Besuchen Sie Mich Einmal’

Mark E – ‘Slave 1’

Wooden Shjips – ‘Shrinking Moon For You’

Muscleheads – ‘Phosphorescence’

Death In Vegas – ‘Ein Fur De Damen’

Japancakes – ‘Soon’ (Ricardo Tobar Mix)

A Sunny Day In Glasgow – ‘No.6 von Karman Street’

Primal Scream – ‘Autobahn 66’
