bled without me

I’m gonna chance my arm and say that, yes, Teengirl Fantasy have definitely at some stage or another “been alone/in a room”. Logan and Nick are resident DJs at The Bedroom Club, luring house ghouls away down pitch black cul-de-sacs and slaying them before repainting the carcass in its own juices, like Manet and Guillaumin with paws covered in bloodcolours. Juiceboxxx have them sussed - stifled loner tension dreams drifting off out an open window, the still-life tableau of an idler’s lair bursting with explore, friction between static and move most evident in drum machines all set to jack but ultimately kept pent by brick, mortar, glass, oak, angst, cash, shame. This is the fate befalling post-generics across the cosmos. This is why they’re almost always skewed parts-sad, -mad, -ecstatic.

‘Hollywood Hills’ b/w ‘Love Don’t Live Here’ - originals out through Dick Move at Pukekos.

Night Shift

There’s no-one harder to write about than Teengirl Fantasy. Oberlin, Ohio students Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss don’t so much make music as sound fugues that drift across the consciousness removing all thoughts of time and place. The starchy, paradise house of ‘Floor To Floor’ feels as though it has to be earned, like a destination it took too long to reach, synths and pipes floating across your dream horizon as refreshing and fluffy as both cold sides of Atlas’s pillow. Hearing is replaced by sight, logic by colours. It’s fantastically disorientating.

There’s no-one harder to write about than Teengirl Fantasy. I don’t deserve this music. You don’t either. Bliss can be found, however, in the form of the four-track TGIF EP, posted with band blessing at the tireless Pukekos.

2OO8 ≠ 32

It’s hard not to feel berk or beast when attempting to cram 12 months into 700 words, so we won’t even try. This late in the day there’s going to be omission to an extent that outstretches the impatient collateral of memory loss, especially as the mind wanders back to recall a year of live music that’s without peer in my 23 on this earth.

So, there’ll be no divvying up of 2008 between movements and moods here. Just a necessary trawl through the shipwreck, flotsam fished from choppy waters and beacon buoys twinkling in the ocean of our terrible collective memory.

Bounty Hunter

Beserkers in a beat harem, Teengirl Fantasy throw themselves upon silver platters of clubland styles, kraut-ish synth tangents and broken house vocals to regurgitate the lot in a brilliant, bursting mess made with acid all their own. Or at least that’s the way things usually play out - ‘Now That’s What I Call Volume 2′ is one of the earliest tracks that Oberlin College, Ohio-based duo Nick and Logan put together and where you might expect a maddened rush through the sonic possibilities presented by the new partnership, it’s one that smoulders slow, a sole insistent loop taking time to catch at everything around it.

Build it does though, as snares that’ve borrowed rasp from dubstep’s dark motley mark busy time, kicking through splashes of synth that evaporate in mid-air like serotonin clouds hanging over downtown heads. A determined groove previewed at 23:30 on Teengirl’s awesome dublab mix, this final edit of ‘NTWICV2′ precedes the release of fresh 7″ ‘Portofino’ b/w ‘New Image Every Day’ on Merok later this month. Jam it in yr earwholes.
